The comic book industry in Ukraine is developing faster and faster every year. To clearly see the changes, Yaroslav Mishenov, founder of the publishing house Vovkulaka, summed up the results, compared them with 2017 and makes predictions for the future.
Results of 2018
I sat down to summarize the comic book results of the year. First of all, I brought up everything that appeared during 2018 (68 editions) and 2017 (42 edition) years.
And here are some interesting statistics for you:
- the total number of publications increased by 62%, of which singles increased by 33%, the number of comics in collections or in book format increased by 83%;
- The number of comics from Ukrainian authors decreased by 10% (mainly due to a decrease in military-themed comics).
- The number of translated comics increased by 127%;
- The share of comics by Ukrainian authors in 2018 is 26% (in 2017 it was 48%);
- The 2018 edition is distributed by genre in the following proportion: the specified percentage of the total number is 2018 / fall-an increase in the number of publications until 2017.
1) Criminal - 1% / drop -50% by 2017.
2) Historical - 4% / drop -67% by 2017.
3) Science fiction-fantasy - 23% / increase + 100% by 2017.
4) Superheroics - 36% / increase + 17.8% by 2017.
5) Children's - 20% / increase of + 180% by 2017.
6) Humorous - 4% / increase of + 500% by 2017.
7) Graphic novel - 4% / drop of 25% by 2017.
8) Non-fiction - 0% / drop of -100% by 2017.
- The number of comic book publishers has increased by 14%;
- The share of the largest publisher in terms of the number of titles in 2018 was 29% of the total number of comics;
What conclusions can be drawn from these figures?:
- the main theme of the comic is no longer war, criminal issues and the like.;
- the pace of licensing is greatly outpacing the creation of Ukrainian content and, most likely, the proportions will continue to change towards licenses.;
- superheroics and science fiction (in fact, superheroics is a kind of fiction, but in comics we display it separately;
- gradual increase in the share of children's comics;
- More and more book publishers are paying attention to comics and new ones are appearing at the same time.;
- finally, a humorous comic strip has appeared that just gives readers a smile.;
- Ukraine still lacks one of the most important genres of comics - erotic.
Community development
An important component of the culture of hand-drawn stories is the community and its reaction, amateur and professional criticism, and the cultural promotion of comics in the public environment.
1) Mass events - conventions / festivals
